Mom Needs Grace

Musings on the life redeemed & purpose redefined

zoo flashback February 22, 2012

Lately, fewer things have thrilled me more than observing my girls’ blossoming sister-friendship. Most of the time, they seem to honestly adore each other’s company.

I found myself grinning at this sweetly predictable picture from a trip to our local zoo last month.

And then, an echo in my mind. Childhood memories flooding back.

Sure enough, while visiting my mother recently, she obligingly dug up one of these little gems…

That’s my adorable big sis front and center in the yellow coat, a couple of our cousins, and me on the eagle’s shoulder in the blue hat. Yes, our frequent trips to the National Zoo were usually documented by a similar shot.

Here’s another one from a few years later with other (obviously thrilled) cousins…

Even the eagle looks miserable, doesn’t he?! And yup, that’s me wearing glasses only the early 80’s could love.

Hmm, sharing this family tradition with the next generation could be serious fun;)

How about you? Did your childhood include any regular rides on concrete wildlife?

Postscript: I couldn’t resist adding another one with a friend from just this week…

There’s no creature these girls can’t tame!

So here they are all decked out in their new Christmas jammies courtesy of Aunt Tippy.

And yes, the little one is a cowgirl.

Brings back memories of a certain set of Wonder Woman underoos

Come on 70’s kids- you know you had some;)

Gifts December 26, 2011

For our crew, Christmas 2011 has been one to cherish.

Although I hope to get back over here soon to share some more stories, for now we are still enjoying the season’s magic of family, food, and gift-giving.

And marveling at the miracle of the ultimate Gift…

Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared among them, and the radiance of the Lord’s glory surrounded them. They were terrified, but the angel reassured them. “Don’t be afraid!” he said. “I bring you good news that will bring great joy to all people. The Savior—yes, the Messiah, the Lord—has been born today in Bethlehem, the city of David! And you will recognize him by this sign: You will find a baby wrapped snugly in strips of cloth, lying in a manger.” Luke 2:9-12

garden girls December 7, 2011

Last month, when the weather was still unseasonably warm, we visited the Tucson Botanical Gardens.

We enjoy the local flavor and ambling feel of this converted home and its surrounding gardens.

The vibrant colors and regional vegetation lend distinct Tucson flair, while seasonal festivities such as Luminaria nights and Butterfly magic help make each visit unique.

Overall, it is an enchanting experience, especially when shared with sweet friends.

Note: this is not one Tucson’s most budget-friendly family excursions. You might want to bring your coupons, membership cards, and picnic lunches!

Freaky phone edition November 30, 2011

This Thanksgiving, my iphone camera was also in full effect. Here is a “fewer-word” Wednesday that makes me smile:)

My in-laws’ house has an amazing porch that wraps almost all the way around.

There is usually a sunny side…

…a shady side…

…and a windy side.

I convinced the girls to sit for a brief moment while I captured this little gem.

Love it.

The big girl quickly bounced up, off to “water” her plants.

The tiny one lingered and discovered this fellow.

She seemed uncertain at first. But then, the strangest thing happened…

She looked around, as if to see who was watching,

slipped him a sly “how YOU doin’?” smile…

and then…

well, things got slightly weird.

She planted one on him!

I’m (laughing) and thankful for my wildly affectionate kids.

Finally fall November 2, 2011

It’s November now and the little fairies are finally able to enjoy the occasional autumn breeze.

Always enchanting.

Treats October 31, 2011

Filed under: sisters — dayna @ 11:55 pm

We went ahead and attempted a little trick-or-treating this year.

And now for the obligatory awkward costume picture:

Thrilled, aren’t they?

Some of you may recognize the hand-me-down bumble-bee. Still cute, right? And yes, that is a slightly predictable fairy princess. She decided it was the best of both worlds: a crown and wings!

Their mom originally had other ideas, but these aren’t the battles I want to fight.

It’s just that I’m pretty sure there is a costume my little one was practically born to wear. Care to venture a guess?

Oh well. Maybe next year…

Just curious, what’s your favorite traditional Halloween candy treat?

This year I’m kind of digging the novelty of the white chocolate Kit Kat bar and I always enjoy a good Twix or Milky Way.

By the way, while raiding the girls’ haul, I learned an important lesson:

Do not, I repeat, do NOT eat the “Bubblegum” Smarties!

Seriously disgusting! I’m still not sure if they are gum or candy, but they are gross!

Just thought I’d save you the trouble of discovering this for yourself;)
